A native of Mobile and a 1955 graduate of Vigor High School; she was a stay-at-home
Mom until her last child was in school; retiring after20 years from Orchard Elementary
School Cafeteria where she served as a Child Nutritional Specialist. Known by students
As “Miss Piggy” she always carried a coin purse in her pocket so no child would go
Without a hot lunch .She was of the Baptist faith, attending both Moffett Road and
Crawford Baptist Church.
Although she could be a harsh and a disciplinarian, she never lost her great sense of humor and would
never denied anyone of anything .Her home was always open and decorated for every holiday and her
Halloween parties were the well-remembered! At meal time you never knew how many feet would be
under her table on any given day. Her food was delicious, school functions were blessed by her
Cupcakes; and her birthday cakes were locally famous. Everyone in the neighborhood wanted
(And received) one. Food, room, bed, clothes and love were always given freely.
She nurtured and was lovingly fond of her "other" children, special “daughter” Josie Thrift Burnham,
Melissa Sullivan Griffin, Johnathan O’ Mary and Charlie Sheffield. Her special love for her Louisiana
