A lady known by many names, but was special to each one that knew her. A staple of the Tanner Williams community, she passed away Friday afternoon, June 23, 2017, surrounded by family after a traumatic car accident. She was on her way to deliver a hot cake and a pot of peas to someone who she wanted to know was loved. This was not an unusual occurrence as she was often delivering a treat to someone for their birthday or just because.
Born in Tanner Williams, Alabama on July 9, 1935, she was a lifetime resident of the area. She graduated Semmes High School in May 1952 and later that year became the bookkeeper at Tanner Williams School where she worked until December 1978. She switched to Grand Bay High School as the bookkeeper in January 1979 and worked until April 1989 where she retired upon the birth of her youngest niece. In 1990, she started working at McFarland Egg Farm as the secretary until 2000.
Passing away just a few weeks shy of her 82nd birthday, Aunt Polly lead a full life traveling to Mexico, England and all over the United States including Hawaii. She never married, but held a special place in the hearts of her brothers, sister, nephews, nieces, and all of their spouses. Her love never stopped at her own family, but continued to her church family which included her home church of Tanner Williams Holiness Church, Foster Grove Holiness Church, and Allentown Holiness Church where she attended church three times during the week as well as never missing Sunday services. She was an avid believer in spreading the love of God though food, notes, and hugs. With no children of her own, she raised, fed and took care of more children than can be counted.
Miss Polly is preceded in death by her parents Harry & Aude Hinton Seward.
She is survived by two younger brothers, Harry K. [Bud] Seward (Rita), William D. [Bill] Seward (Jenny), and a younger sister, Diana S. McDuffie (James), 7 nieces and nephews, Dale Seward (Mary Jane), Carl [Gene] Seward (Lynn), Steve Seward (Susan), Susie Kelley (Bill), Kyles McDuffie (Amber), Dennis McDuffie (Aaron), and Mary McDuffie, 14 great nieces and nephews, Jacob, Kristin and Rachel Seward, Brandon and Carlee Seward, Megan and Andrew Seward, Kase, Koda, Kole Kelley, Colter and Kylah McDuffie, and Aaliyah McDuffie, one great great nephew, Bradlee Seward, and other relatives including two aunts, Asline Pierce and Mabel Johns.
The visitation for Polly will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile, AL. The funeral service will be held at Tanner Williams Holiness Church, 14801 Tanner Williams Road, Wilmer, Alabama on Thursday, June 29, 2017 beginning at 11:00 am with Rev. Donnie Williamson and Rev. Jimmie McDuffie officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment immediately following at Joyner Cemetery.
