Rebecca Parker Wood, 94, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019 in Mobile, Alabama. Rebecca was born to Charles and Dora Parker on August 9, 1925 in Evergreen, Alabama. After graduating from Liefian High School, Rebecca moved to Mobile to join the Nurses Cadet Corps – a program facilitated by Providence Hospital to train nurses to go overseas and assist with the war effort during World War II. The war ended before she was deployed, however, and she became a surgical assistant for Dr. Wood for over thirty-eight years. After he retired, Rebecca went to work with Providence Hospital.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Arthur A. Wood; her parents; four sisters; as well as nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her nieces, Frances Gleason, Jolyn Wilson, Nancy Ross, and Julene Shell; a nephew, Stephen Ptomy; caretaker, Carlin Russell and family; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and other cherished family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 18, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home in Mobile, Alabama with a graveside service immediately following in Pine Crest Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Providence Hospital Fund.
