Receil Chisolm Godwin was born on January 11, 1926, in Coxburg, Mississippi. On January 19, 2026, eight days after achieving her 100th year of life, Receil moved from her earthly home to her eternal home in heaven.
Receil moved to Mobile, Alabama at age 17 and quickly was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to support the war effort. She remained continuously employed by the Corps until her retirement in 1982. Receil was proud and grateful for the opportunity to serve in the federal civil service. She was recognized multiple times for outstanding performance and established deep friendships that lasted well into her retirement.
Receil believed that one of best ways to broaden one's perspective on life was through travel. She visited all 50 states, 27 foreign countries and completed 11 cruises.
Receil was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Betty Lee Abel Chisolm; her husband, Arnold W. Godwin; her sister Mary Frances Meeks; brothers Wilford (Scoot) Chisolm and Yule (Shine) Chisolm and nephew Eddie Chisolm. She is survived by her brother Jack Chisolm; nephews David Lee Meeks, Jr. (Gwen), Mike Meeks (Debby), Tim Meeks, Mickey Chisolm and niece, Tanya Storey: godchildren Vanessa Malcom and Anissa Mayo; and very special friend Yvonne Gamotis.
Receil was the first born of thirty-two grandchildren on the Abel family side. She relished her role as family matriarch maintaining address lists, sending out notes and cards, and strongly encouraging and supporting the Abel family reunion now approaching its 80th year of continuous meeting. All of Receil's immediate and extended family were very special to her. She loved them all. Receil will be remembered for her loving and generous heart, her strong faith and her dedication to family.
Visitation for Receil will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 9:30 AM until 11AM at Pine Crest Funeral Home, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, AL with services beginning at 11AM in the funeral home chapel.
