A man of deep faith and dedication, Herb’s life was defined by both service and scholarship. He proudly served as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, with postings in Korea, Okinawa, Texas, Alaska, Hawaii, and California. After his service, he returned to Mobile, where he became a public school teacher and a bi-vocational minister, working tirelessly for the state of Alabama. Herb’s calling eventually led him into full-time ministry as a Baptist pastor, shepherding churches across Alabama wherever God led him.
Herb was a lifelong learner. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Howard College in 1959 and a Master of Arts from the University of South Alabama in 1971. His commitment to theological study was reflected in his multiple degrees from Covington Theological Seminary, including a Doctor of Ministry in Bible (2001), a Master of Theology (2005), a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Studies (2010), and a Doctor of Divinity (2011). Herb served as Dean of the Mobile campus of Covington Theological Seminary, receiving numerous honors for his service, including the Faculty Award in 2006, Outstanding Service recognition in 2009, and Alumnus of the Year in 2011. In 2011, he was also recognized for his 55 years of faithful biblical pastoral ministry.
Beyond his ministry, Herb made significant contributions as an area supervisor in Mobile and later as the state supervisor for Alabama's vocational rehabilitation services, demonstrating his dedication to helping others both spiritually and practically.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Earl Sr., and his siblings Earl Jr., Dorothy, and Rita. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 73 years, Bobbie, their two beloved daughters, Phyllis and Paula, and three cherished grandchildren, Heather (Eric), Beau (Ashley), and Adam. Herb was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Will, who brought him immense joy.
Herb’s life was a testament to faith, service, and learning. He touched countless lives through his work in the classroom, the pulpit, and his vocational service. His legacy will live on through the family and friends who loved him dearly.
