Richard Nitz, a native of Chicago, IL and resident of Irvington, AL, age 78, died Thursday, October 29, 2020 of complications related to Covid-19. He was known to all his friends as “Dick” and there are many words to describe him, but the most important are: Husband, Father and Friend to all that knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda Juul Nitz and two children. Jane Nitz Douglas of Grand Bay, AL (Randal Douglas) and John Nitz of Austin, TX. He was a grandfather and great grandfather to the Colley family for over 30 years. He is also survived by numerous friends, family members, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. too may to name but all will miss him dearly.
He worked in Hardware for many years and owned a successful True Value Hardware Store in both Bayou La Batre and Mobile, AL. He was a jack of all trades and there was nothing he couldn’t fix. In his early years, he was a deep-sea diver where he discovered virgin wrecks and drag racer where his love of cars continued until his last days. His favorite car of course was the Corvette and he had two favorites. His first Corvette was his 1999 Corvette Coupe and his prize winning 1961 Roadster where he won several car shows. He was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America (Mobile, AL) and the Florida Corvette Club. He and his wife Linda had many adventures on the road, but one of their favorites was their Route 66 trip where they were able to visit many family and friends along the way.
He was a 1960 graduate of Grayslake High School in Grayslake, IL. Where he continues to have many friends. His accomplishments vary widely from President of Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce to a current member of the Mostellar Medical Board in Irvington, AL. He was a member of the First Evangelical Methodist Church of Irvington, AL and he loved his church family and helped in any capacity that was needed.
A special thank you to all the Doctors and Nurses of Providence Hospital who described Dick as the “sweetest” patient that have ever had and Radney Funeral Home for making arrangements. A memorial service will be planned to celebrate a life well lived at a later date.
