

Robert Lee Byrd, Jr. (Bob), a resident of Mobile, Alabama for many years, was born in Birmingham, AL on July 21, 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee Byrd, Sr. and Alice Lee Brewster Byrd. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Rutherford Wefel Byrd and their three daughters, Barkley Brewster Byrd Shreve (Lewis) of Mobile, AL, Catherine Rutherford Byrd Morton (Barry) of Sterrett, AL, and Mary Elizabeth Byrd Favret (Andy) of New Orleans, LA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Lewis Robert Shreve (Julia), Mary Alice Shreve, Nicholas Byrd Favret, Michael Davis Favret and Mary Dorothy Morton, and one great-grandson, James Fulton Shreve. Bob graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Business Administration Degree in 1954. He obtained his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1957.
Bob was in the private practice of law in Mobile from 1957 to 1981 and appointed Circuit Judge in November 1981. His professional memberships included: Mobile County Bar Association; Young Lawyers Section of Mobile County Bar Association; The Association of Trial Lawyers of America; Law Science Academy of America; Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute; American Judicature Society; American Board of Trial Advocates; Supreme Court of Alabama Standing Advisory Committee on Civil Practice and Procedure; Alabama Association of Circuit Judges; The International Academy of Trial Judges; Alabama State Bar Association; and the American Bar Association. In addition, Bob served on the Board of Trustees of Doctors Hospital of Mobile, Inc. and the Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of Mobile, Inc. He was a member of Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, Mobile Touchdown Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, The Country Club of Mobile and several Mystic societies. Bob will be remembered for his keen mind, dry wit, and love of his family. He enjoyed traveling, reading, University of Alabama football, and his men’s breakfast group.
The family thanks the devoted caregivers for their service: Beverly Bassett, London Hill, Zellina Hill, Anna Phillips, Laura Thompson, Deborah Wallace and Gina Williams. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, followed by visitation in the Fellowship Hall. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, 10 Westminster Way, Mobile, AL 36608.
