

Robert (Bob) Lee Martin – Age 83, died September 14, 2014 in Mobile, Alabama. He was born in Davenport, Iowa on August 4, 1931 to Dr. John J. Martin and Marcella Costello Martin. He attended the University of Notre Dame and played football with the Fighting Irish for four years. In 1954 he entered the United States Air Force and became a pilot. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth Ann Russell Martin and his brothers, Father John J. Martin and Dr. Donald E. Martin, and sisters, Barbara Dockery, Virginia Barnard, Elizabeth Hiegel. He is survived by his son, Reverend Monsignor Stephen E. Martin of Mobile, and sister, Jeanne Fuller of Denver, Colorado.
In the United States Air Force, he served in numerous assignments which included flight instructor, governmental adviser and fighter pilot. He flew the F-105 fighter in 100 combat missions over North Vietnam and was awarded the United States Silver Star and several Distinguished Flying Crosses and Air Combat Medals.
After retirement in Montgomery, Alabama, he served as director of the MARC group home and later was the founding Executive Director of the Montgomery Area Food Bank.
Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street in Mobile on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Catholic Church in Montgomery on Thursday, September 18, at 10:30 a.m. with interment to follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Mobile, Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School or Montgomery Area Food Bank.
