Robert (Bob) Hughes Shearer, Sr., age 88, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2024, at Springhill Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. Born on July 2, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, Bob was a longtime resident of Alabama, having grown up in Chickasaw.
Bob was a graduate of Vigor High School, class of 1954. He continued his education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he studied Commerce and Business Administration with a minor in Secondary Education. Following his studies, Bob proudly served in the United States Army, Stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Sam Houston in Texas.
After his military service, Bob remained in the San Antonio area for several years before returning to Mobile to start a family and pursue a career in banking. He retired in 1996 after a successful career in the financial sector.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of greater than 60 years, Shirley C. Shearer, and the families of their two sons: Robert H. Shearer, Jr. (wife Jennifer F. Shearer) and Jeffery Hudson Shearer (wife Elizabeth Shearer). He also leaves behind three grandchildren that he cherished beyond belief: Rachel L. Shearer, Sara Jane Shearer Spellmeyer and Rebecca B. Shearer.
Bob is also survived by nieces and nephews that he loved: Jackie Shearer, Joan Phillips, Rick Shearer, James M. Shearer, Sunny Dallifore and Casey Burke.
Bob was preceded in death by his father John B. Shearer, mother Eloise M. Shearer, brothers Jack Shearer and Don Shearer, and granddaughter Olivia M. Shearer.
The funeral services for Bob Shearer will be held at Government Street Baptist Church on Saturday, August 17th. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the service commencing at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, there will be a graveside ceremony at Pine Crest Cemetery.
Pallbearers attending the service will be Brian Barnett, Wayne Dobbs, David Ellis, Mike Ellis, Doug Hoskins, and Dennis Melton.
Bob Shearer’s life was marked by his ability to always have a funny story to share with his family and friends when they would gather with him. It gave him great joy to be in the company of others when laughter could be shared. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
