Robert was born December 1, 1920, in Mobile, Alabama to Luther and Willie (Busby) Wheeler. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. On August 18, 1948, Robert married the former Jeanie Faye Armstrong, and they spent 62 loving years together, building a home, a family, and a life of service and caring. Employed by Alabama Dry Docks and Shipbuilding Company for 43 years as an electrical foreman, Robert was a man of many talents, having built the home he lived in for almost 60 years. He was also accomplished in business, drafting, auto repair, plumbing, gardening, and cooking. Robert loved camping, fishing, and gardening, and he and his wife Jeanie spent many summers canning vegetables from their garden. Robert was also known for his pecan pies and pear pies, many people receiving these as gifts of caring. Robert was a member of Moffett Road Baptist Church, and taught Sunday School for many years at Gulf Hills Baptist Church. He spent much of his retirement years taking care of his wife Jeanie and helping others in his family and church.
Robert is survived by his four children: Robert Harding Wheeler, Jr. and wife Sandy of Mobile, AL; James David Wheeler, Sr. and wife Anice of Monroe, LA; Emily Wheeler McGough and husband Dwight of Mobile, AL; and Patricia Wheeler Glass of Mobile, AL.
