Roland R. Crump, 90, died following a long illness on July 9, 2020 at home in the loving care of Hospice and his family. He was born on July 29, 1929 in Crossville, AL to Charles and Maude Crump. Roland graduated in 1953 from the University of Alabama. Roll Tide! He served in the US Army with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean conflict. He served in the Signal Core for the American Forces Korea Network (AFKN) as the chief Engineer. He held several Engineering positions in corporate America but most of his career as Electronic Engineer was with Ingall’s Shipbuilding but finished his career in civil service with the US Navy Department, rank of GS14. He retired in 1992.
Roland met and married his wife in Korea in 1955 and brought his war bride, Kong Soon home and settled in Mobile, Alabama. He is preceded in death by both of his parents. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years and two sons: Harry Crump (Lois) of Mobile, J. Mike Crump of Theodore, two daughters Anna Bowden (Denny) of Grand Bay and Lora Rowland of Dallas, TX. He will also be missed by his 9 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He gave his children the most important gift a father can give his children which was to love their mother.
He liked to fish and play his guitar but his passion was Ham Radios. His call letters W4USB was used in the past when cell phones were not around during weather emergencies for communication. He then became a computer guru as the internet became the rage. He was the go-to person for all things computer related.
Roland was a true southern gentleman who still opened and held the door for his wife and never failed to be courteous and kind to everyone. He was among the last of the Greatest Generation and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Funeral arrangement by Radney’s – 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL 36606 and visitation for immediate family at 12:30 on Monday. Graveside will be at Serenity - 8691 Old Pascagoula Road, Theodore, AL 36582 at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 13 with Father Sherwin conducting the service. Friends are welcome to attend while practicing social distancing.
