Ross Martin Diamond III passed away on Monday, August 16. The 76-year-old native of Mobile is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty McDuffie Diamond, as well as their daughters Kathryn Diamond Camp (Richard Camp), Rachael Diamond McCall (Barrett McCall), and Marian “Mimi” Diamond; sister Cheryl Diamond Fields, brother Ben Diamond; and four grandchildren, Ryan Camp, Lowry Camp, Charley McCall and Vivian McCall. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross Martin Diamond Jr. and Catherine Wahl Diamond; and his brother John Diamond.
Mr. Diamond attended St. Ignatius Catholic School and McGill Institute, and was a proud alumnus of the University of Alabama, earning both undergraduate and juris doctorate degrees while at the Capstone. There, he was a member of the U of A golf team and Sigma Nu fraternity. Ross practiced law for more than five decades and earned national recognition in his specialty of Admiralty Law. His civil litigation work included cases heard by the U.S. District Courts and the Supreme Court of the United States where he presented amicus briefs on behalf of seamen impacted by the Exxon Valdez oil spill, aiding in a notable decision in the history of environmental and maritime law.
He served as president of the Admiralty section of the American Bar Association, president of the Mobile Bar Association, and in numerous leadership positions in the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association, and the Alabama Bar Association. A lifelong advocate for those in need, he served for more than twenty years in various capacities for United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile.
A devoted husband and father, Ross will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, sportsmanship on the golf course, and love of Mobile Mardi Gras and the Crimson Tide.
