Sara Alice Myer, 85, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Sara was a long time resident of the Mobile and Bayou La Batre areas. She was born in Rome, Georgia and was a remarkable student growing up. Sara graduated from high school at 16 and had perfect attendance throughout her school years. She earned a degree in Home Economics from the Georgia College for Women.
She then married Dr. Edward M. Myer, M.D., and moved to Bayou La Batre to manage his private medical practice. Often, patients would use alternative currency in the form of seafood to pay their bills, which delighted Sara, because she was an excellent cook. Among her specialties were gumbo and cheesecake. She was also quite the seamstress in her younger days. Sara also owned “Samms Package Store” in Bayou La Batre, the place everyone went into claiming to know “Sam”. Little did they know, “Sam” was actually “Sara Alice Myer”. She would eventually go on to seek retirement in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
Ms. Myer was preceded in death by her parents, Wilburn and Kimmie Sweatt; her son, Steven Myer; and her brother, Wilburn C. Sweatt Jr. She is survived by her son, Tom (Lori) Myer; her daughter, Kimmie (Bill) Rabe; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Seth, and William Rabe.
Ms. Myer was loved by all who encountered her. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend a gracious “Thank You” to the staff and caretakers at Watermark Villas and Emerald Coast Hospice for their many years of loving care with their mother.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Association.
