Born in Mobile on November 24, 1945, Sharron was the only child of John Henry Benthal and Gertrude Cecelia Beach Benthal. She lived her entire life on the bay on Hollingers Island.
She was married to the love of her life, Thomas Stacy Vereen, Jr., for 58 years. Together, they built a home filled with love and laughter. Their greatest joy was their family, raising four children: Margie Vereen Lilly, Jill Vereen Golemon, John Stacy Vereen (Shanna), and Todd Matthew Vereen (Samantha).
Sherry’s legacy continues through her eleven grandchildren: Alexandra Lilly Harrison (Andrew), Annie Laurie Lilly, Amy Kathleen Golemon, James Mason Golemon, Jolie Vereen Golemon, Benjamin Matthew Vereen (Jade), Thomas Bayley Vereen, Anne Bradley Vereen, Gage Alexander Vereen, Julia Michaele Black, and James Michael Chunn; and through her two great-grandchildren, Grayson Stone Vereen and Griffith Thomas Harrison.
She also leaves behind her cherished lifelong friends Cynthia Parham and Sarah Hamilton, and a host of extended family and friends who loved her dearly.
Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws Thomas Stacy Vereen, Sr. and Luvern Hall Vereen, and her beloved sister-in-law Beverly Vereen Smith.
Sherry will be remembered for her deep faith, her love of the beach, her strength, generosity, and the way she made everyone feel at home. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will carry on through all who knew her.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to her caregivers – Rhonda Kitchen, Stephanie French, Destiny Ludwig – and the team at Community Hospice for their compassion and support.
Visitation for Sherry will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mobile. A rosary service will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m.
