
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Roxie Ann Dickey Schell, daughter Pamela (Pam) Schell Phillips (Geep), grandchildren Sarah Frances, George, and Virginia Phillips; brother John Clarence Schell (Merry Ann) and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz Eugene Schell and Bernice Henson Schell, brother Fritz Eugene (Gene) Schell, Jr., sister-in-law Penny Coley Schell, and nephew Fritz Eugene (Fritz) Schell, III.
Sid graduated from Auburn University in 1961 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He then graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1968, where he was a member of The Order of the Coif and The Farrah Order of Jurisprudence. He practiced maritime law and oil and gas law with the firm Reams, Philips, Brooks, Schell, Gaston and Hudson, PC, and retired while Of Counsel for Fowler, Rodriquez, and Chalos, L.L.P. Once retired, his primary joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
He was an artist, model builder, scuba diver, and an avid historical researcher. He was the recipient of the Elizabeth B. Gould Research Award by the Mobile Historic Development Commission for primary research on the CSS Huntsville and the CSS Tuscaloosa. He was appointed Adjunct Research Associate in 1985 with the Department of Sociology/Anthropology of the University of South Alabama. He served on the U.S.S Tecumseh Commission, C.S.S. Alabama Commission, and at one time chaired the Underwater Archaeology Committee for the Alabama Historic Commission. A five term chairman of the Board of Directors of the History Museum of Mobile, he recently authored two books on the subjects of Fort Powell and The Continental Navy on the Gulf Coast 1775-1781.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Spring Hill Baptist Church on Monday, June 9 at 11:00am, with Visitation starting at 10:00am. Graveside services and interment will be in the Chatom Cemetery in Chatom, AL at 3:00pm. Condolences may be offered at www.radney-mobile.com.
