Sondra Lee Weinberg Gurwitch passed away on August 28, 2019 at the age of 84. She was born in Cleveland, OH. As a Penn State freshman, she went to Mobile with her college friend & met her future husband. Following her marriage, she moved to Birmingham, where she graduated from Birmingham Southern University. In 1960, when her husband left the Air Force, the family moved to Mobile where she found her true home. She was preceded in death by her parents, David & Esther Weinberg; husband, Dr. William A. Gurwitch; her youngest daughter, Brandi M. Gurwitch; & her brother-in-law, Bert Larry Gurwitch. Sandy is survived by her two children, Dr. Robin H. Gurwitch & Marci B. Gurwitch Ballin (Jeffrey Ballin). A proud Bubbe to four grandchildren, Erin Gurwitch Collins & Benjamin, Alexander "Alex", & William "Billy" Ballin, Sandy also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Janet "Cookie" Gurwitch, nieces, cousins, & friends. Her intelligence, quick wit, & humor made her a treasured member of the Ahavas Chesed congregation, mahjong games, lunch groups, & book clubs. She was an avid Bama fan who lived a full life, enriched by friends & family. Sandy epitomized the saying that "the [woman] is a success who has lived well, laughed often, & loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men [& women] & the love of children." She will be truly missed. May her memory be a blessing. Burial Services will be at Ahaved Chesed Synagogue Cemetery (851 Owen St., 36604) on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019 at 10:00 am. The family will receive visitors at the Gurwitch home after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brandi Gurwitch Memorial Grant (Brandi M. Gurwitch Memorial Scholarship, c/o Sigma Delta Tau Foundation, 714 Adams Street, Carmel, IN 46032) or the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund at Ahavas Chesed Synagogue (705 Regents Way Mobile, Alabama 36609).
