Sophia M. Rockwell Marcus, “Miss Sophie” - the heavenly gates were opened yet again for our family on Tuesday morning, July 23, 2013, to accept another Angel into our Lord’s loving arms. Our mother, lovingly known to many as “Miss Sophie,” and to others as “Gan Gan,” was born on April 14, 1928 in her family’s home in Satsuma, AL along with her identical twin sister, Theresa. She was a graduate of John-Ellen Agee Memorial School of Mobile in 1946. As a young lady she was a member of the “Rainbow Girls” and later was a member of the Fort Conde Chapter of the “D.A.R.” Mrs. Marcus was employed for many years at Becks Day Care where she delighted in teaching the young children and later the infants. Many adults in Mobile with children of their own have grown up under her watchful eye. They lovingly remember and refer to her as “Miss Sophie, our teacher.” Our mother was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church. When she was not able to attend church services, she delighted in reading the Sunday bulletins brought home to her.
Mrs. Marcus was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Frank R. Marcus; parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Rockwell; twin sister, Theresa Rockwell Ziebe; and granddaughter, Amanda Mechelle Jones. She is survived by her children, Cynthia “Cindy” M. Jones (Oscar), William R. “Randy” Marcus (Penny), and Wayne Alan Marcus; sisters, Mary R. Sweetser (Claude) and Helen R. Hamilton (Jim); three grandchildren, Amy M. Marcus, Ashley M. Crittenden, and Devin A. Marcus; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Monday, July 29, 2013, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Spiller officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 28, from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 6101 Grelot Rd., Mobile, AL 36609. Condolences may be offered at www.mmgfuneralhome.com. Arrangements by Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 6040 Three Notch Road, Mobile, Alabama 36619.
