

Stephen D. Hicks, a life-long resident of Irvington, Alabama passed away on March 3, 2014 in Little Rock, Arkansas at UAMS Hospital. He was surrounded by family and friends. “Steve” is survived by his wife of 29 years, Dr. Jamie Ladnier-Hicks, and two children, Jared and Caroline. He was born on April 27, 1960 and preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Eloise Abel Hicks of Gadsden, AL. Steve retired from the telephone company with 31 years of dedicated service. In addition, he enjoyed providing music and entertainment in the community as a DJ for over 28 years. Steve coached football at Zirlott Park in Bayou La Batre for 21 years and also served as president of the local and county football associations. Many of those years, he secured county championships and often provided transportation and equipment for children in the community. Steve also coached baseball and Upward basketball. For approximately 10 years, he announced Friday night football games at Alba High and Bryant High Schools. For over 12 years Steve traveled to many motocross tracks in the southeastern United States to announce races. Steve was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Bayou La Batre, AL, and served as a volunteer firefighter in earlier years.
In addition to his wife and children, Steve is survived by two brothers, Michael (Caryn) Hicks of Ragland, AL and Scott (Brenda) Hicks of Warner Robins, GA; in-laws Lavert and Eula Ladnier, John (Nancy) Ladnier, Royce (Tina) Ladnier, and Amanda (Zack) Turberville. Steve has a multitude of nephews and nieces, Connie (Rodger) Kelley, Nicholas (Misty) Ladnier, T-John (Amanda) Ladnier, Heather Ladnier, Jada Ladnier, Brent Ladnier, Royce Ladnier II, and Tori Turberville of Irvington, AL, Robert Hicks, Ryan Hicks, and Kaitie Hicks of Warner Robins, Brian Hicks of Atlanta, and Matthew Hicks of Ragland. In addition, he is survived by several great nieces and nephews including Savannah Williams, Colton Ladnier, Jillian Hicks, Asher Hicks, Caleigh Hicks, and Ethan Hicks.
The family will receive friends in the chapel at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Sunday, March 9 beginning at 12, followed by a memorial service celebrating Steve’s life at 2 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ladnier-Hicks Education Fund. Please contact a family member for additional details. Furthermore, the family would like to offer their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Bart Barlogie, his nurses and staff at the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy at UAMS, the UAMS Family Home, Dr. Thomas Butler of USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, Dr. Jacob Webster, and Dr. Kevin Donahoe for their support over the past two and a half years.
