Steven Garrett Stanley left this earth for Heaven on August 9, 2016, free from his debilitating pain at last. He was born on July 28, 1963, and enjoyed his childhood in Mobile, especially spending summers fishing off Dauphin Island with his family. Love for God, honor for his country and duty for family even when it was hard, was his life’s motto. He served in the Navy as a young man, stationed on the USS Peterson DD 969, where he earned the nickname “Bird Man”. After and honorable discharge, he received training and became a skilled machinist, working on specialized and intricate projects. Steven gained the reputation as someone to be depended upon to do the jobs right and on schedule. From his daughters: Daddy was a simple kind of man, someone to love and just know he loved his family with every fiber of his soul. Whenever we needed anything, he would find a way. Never afraid of hard work or getting his hand dirty, he was a fighter, tough as nails. He was the strongest man we know. He always believed in us more than we believed in ourselves, pushing us to be better than our best and to never settle. He had a great respect for his country and was proud to have served. And, he loved us. We never had to question that. He was preceded in death by his father, Julian Stanley, grandparents, William Shirley, Irene Shirley and Roxie Bates and aunt Nina Will. Steven Stanley is survived by his daughters, Sarah Stanley, Savannah Martin, son-in-law Alex Martin, the absolute love of his life, grandson Bryson Martin, mother, Nelda Stanley; brother, Christopher Stanley (Cindy), sisters, Teresa Fleming (John) and Robin Miller (Doug), aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home on Friday, August 12, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, AL at 12:30 p.m. with military honors.
