Van Laird

October 9, 1952November 20, 2021

Jan Bentley Laird passed away November 20, 2021, at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital at the age of 69. Jan was born in Mobile, AL to Van Laird Sr. and Georgia Dixon Laird. She graduated from the University of South Alabama with a Bachelor’s degree in education and later earned her Master’s degree. She taught English at Vigor High School while sponsoring student programs for 25 years. Jan loved the outdoors. She especially enjoyed kayaking, sailing, and gardening. She was a member of the Mobile Yacht Club and Alba Club. In her younger days of sailing she won many competitive awards along the Gulf Coast. As a master gardener, she served as chairperson of the Oakleigh Garden District Beautification Committee for several years. Because she was a master gardener, she was hired by Lowe’s to be a plant specialist. She retained a loyal customer following and one year sold more Christmas poinsettias than any other Lowe’s employee in the entire company. She lived on Mobile Bay and later moved to Oakleigh. She was equally proud of both homes and the beauty she brought to each. She is survived by her brother Van Laird, Jr. Her beloved yorkie, “Baby Beignet” who will both miss her dearly. Visitation will be at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Friday, November 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Animal Rescue Foundation 6140 Rangeline Road, Theodore, Alabama 36582 (251) 586-5534.

Ms. Laird was one of my favorite teachers of all time! I had her for 2 classes my Senior year at Vigor, English & Speech. I still think of her and the things she taught me any time I have to speak in front of a group. She was passionate about teaching. I didn't like high school very much but having her as a teacher made it bearable because I looked forward to the two classes I had with her each day. She had such a zest of life. I was so saddened to hear of her passing. I wish her family and friends peace and comfort. Please know that she touched many lives during her time here.

Jan and I met at vigor high, we played ball for Chanel 10 news for 8 yrs together she was so athletic, we would go gigging in dog river behind my apartment at grand view . Spend hours on the water she was full of happiness all the time and always had something positive to say. I will miss you Jan may you always be our guardian angel that guides us in the right direction. RIP my friend, love you sissy.
