William Samuel "Mr. Bill" Chavers passed peacefully October 18. Born in McNeil, MS and raised by Clyde Gladston Chavers and Annie May Hinton Chavers, he was an exceptional athlete who played competitive sports throughout the southeast. To describe Mr. Bill as a character would be an understatement. He made a living as a butcher, store owner, lumber salesman, bailiff, court administrator and auctioneer. In later years, he entertained at his store, Mr. Bill's Fresh Junk. It appears most of his treasures remain intact and waiting to be claimed. Mr. Bill cultivated many friends due to his hard work, generosity and charisma. Gruff but gregarious, he was unselfish with his time, money and gifts. It was not uncommon for him to take care of others without fanfare or acknowledgment. Mr. Bill was a phenomenal golfer and possessed a deadly short game. He was probably the best "money player" in Mobile during his day having once said I only missed 1 putt that mattered. High praise, indeed. Mr. Bill was active at Wilmer United Methodist Church as well as other civic and charitable organizations. Although afflicted by Progressive SupraNuclear Palsy, he never complained nor felt pity. Mr. Bill leaves behind the love of his life of 57 years, Marjorie Rose (Tanner) Chavers. Together, they were avid travelers who always took roads less traveled. He is also survived by two sons: Walter G. (Stoney) Chavers (Kathy); Michael Chavers; and three grandchildren, Sara Rose Chavers; Michael Tanner Chavers, Jr.: and Barr Gladstone Chavers. The family extends appreciation to his many caregivers and Kindred Hospice who made his remaining days comfortable. Visitation will take place 9:30-11 am, October 22 at Radney's Funeral Home on Dauphin Street with a brief memorial service to follow in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wilmer Cemetery Association Fund. Mr. Bill is now healed and whole; he walks with Jesus.
