Bill was born on July 1, 1943, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Clinton and Winifred Ferges. As part of a military family, he spent his childhood living on naval bases in several cities around the United States. His early years helped shape the compassionate, vibrant, and steadfast man he would become.
Bill attended Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama, from 1957 to 1961, where he met the love of his life, Eleanor “Pat” Ferges, his wife of 63 years. He was a proud graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi. He enjoyed a long and successful career in computer systems, beginning at IBM and growing with the industry, including many years of work implementing medical systems in major hospitals around the country. Over the years, Bill and Pat lived in Alexandria, Mobile, Monroeville, Harrisonburg, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Chicago, and Atlanta, while their family grew to include their children, Lance and Stacy.
After retirement, Bill and Pat moved back to the Mobile area, and Bill’s consulting afforded them the opportunity to travel while Bill worked in Europe. At home, Bill spent early mornings on his beloved Timber Creek Golf Course with good friends. He was an active and longtime member of Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church. He and Pat loved spending time in Gulf Shores with their children and three granddaughters, enjoying the beach and local seafood.
Above all, Bill was devoted to his family, who will carry his memory forward. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pat; his children, Lance (Jane) Ferges and Stacy (Jason) Rutherford; and his grandchildren, Lauren, Allie, and Brin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Winifred Ferges.
Bill will always be remembered for his warmth, charm, sense of humor, and strength of character. He will live on in the stories he shared, the values he passed down, and the love he gave to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed, and his memory is a blessing.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 25 at 10:00am at Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice.
