Wimberly Dixon Hory

September 14, 1925June 3, 2019

Wimberly moved to Mobile as a child and grew up loving Mobile and the surrounding areas. As a young adult, she met the love of her life, Al, at Brookley Air Force Base. They were married for 52 wonderful years. Wimberly was involved in many organizations and social groups throughout her life, and even was an entrepreneur. She started her own catering business in Mobile called Wimberly Hory Catering, providing delicious meals all over Alabama for over 20 years. In retirement, Wimberly moved to Dauphin Island, or "paradise," as she called it. She was on the committee that brought St. Francis to Dauphin Island, a church that Wim always held very dear to her heart. The infamous Gumbo Fundraiser, started by Wimberly and Blanche Emerson, became a staple of the island, and the soup remains some of the best gumbo many have ever eaten! Wimberly worked at the Dauphin Island Welcome Center, where she welcomed snow birds and visitors to the island. Wimberly never knew a stranger, and above all, deeply cared for her family and friends. Her kind and caring nature was a gift to all she met. She is predeceased by her parents, Grover Cleveland Dixon and Ellen Wimberly Dixon. She is survived by her three children, Michael Anthony Hory (Nancy), Grover Dixon Hory, Ellen Hory Cooper (Terry); her grandchildren: Wimberly Murphy, Nolan Cooper, Garland Tsarouchas, Dixon Hory Jr., Sam Hory and 11 great-grandchildren. Many thanks to Wim's wonderful friends, and a special thank you to Murray House and Saads Hospice Center for their wonderful care. At last the bridge club ladies are intact! The family suggests memorials be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church or to Murray House. The visitation will be held June 7, at St. Francis Episcopal Church from 12-1pm, followed by the funeral service at 1pm. Graveside services will follow at Pine Crest Funeral Home.

When we were kids growing up we loved to visit the Horys, especially Wimberly. She treated us like family and we considered her our other mother. We loved her and actually we all had a crush on her.
She was a wonderful loving patient mother who always had good things to say about everyone. She made us feel like real people not just kids. Wimberley, we will miss you.
