Cornelia Van Setten

Cora was born a sibling of 3, to Arend and Maria Buis in Haarlemmermeer, Netherlands on December 13, 1930. Cora married GJ (Harry) Van Setten in 1950. Harry and Cora immigrated to Canada in 1954 and then to the US in 1958 when Harry started working at the Ford Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights IL. Harry and Cora moved to Matteson IL in 1960 where she remained a resident for the next 65 years.

Cora was involved in community activities with AARP and the Jones Center. She also volunteered at the South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights IL, and Rich Township’s Pantry.

Cora was an avid knitter and crocheter. Through a class at the Senior Center of Rich Township, she and her fellow crafters made lap blankets. They would amass around 30 blankets and then distribute them a couple times a year to nursing home residents at various locations. Harry and Cora took many trips after retirement with the Park Forest Library. They also enjoyed walking and biking

Cora is survived by Daughter Louise Hummel of Thornton IL, Daughter in Law Joyce Van Setten of Matteson IL, Grandchildren Michelle Van Setten and Steven (Kathleen) Van Setten of Matteson IL. Cora was preceded in death by Husband GJ (Harry) Van Setten, Son Ronald Van Setten and Grandson Isaac Van Setten.

A memorial service is being held at Skyline Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 24800 S Governors Hwy, in Monee IL on September 20, 2025. Services are from 11am to 2pm. There will be a small service at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made to South Suburban Humane Society in Cora’s honor, or to your local animal shelter.
