Gunther Hans Baumann, 92, of South Chicago Heights, IL, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in West Germany, Gunther immigrated to Quebec, Canada, as a young man before being recruited by Ford in 1957 to work as a skilled tool and die maker at the Chicago Stamping Plant. He dedicated his career to Ford until his retirement in 1992.
Gunther’s greatest joy was his family, who always came first. He was a devoted father to Karin (Steven) McNeil and a proud grandfather to William McNeil, Steven McNeil Jr., Anna Marie Baumann, Katherine Baumann, and Brooke Byrns, whom he cherished as a granddaughter. His beloved great-grandchildren, Steven W. McNeil, Olivia McNeil, Levi Baumann, and Lawton Stephens, whom he loved as a great-grandson, brought him immense happiness. Gunther is also survived by his sister, Irmgard (Heinz) Weber; brothers-in-law, Willi (Moui) Schoen, Jim Cox, and Arnold Evers; sisters-in-law, Irene (Chi) Diep and Helga La Fountain; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edeltraut “Traute” Baumann (née Schoen); son, Gunther Baumann Jr.; parents, Hans and Berta Baumann; sisters, Lore Schulz, Annamarie Baumann, and Gisela Lehmann; parents-in-law, Willi and Erika Schoen; sisters-in-law, Hannelore Cox, Karin Evers, and Bridgette (Albert) Bates; brothers-in-law, Dean La Fountain, Hans Schoen, and Frank Schoen; and his loyal dog, Mickey Mouse.
Gunther lived life with passion and enthusiasm. He treasured family vacations to Gatlinburg, Estes Park, Colorado, and Lake Gogebic, Michigan, where he created lasting memories with Traute, Karin, Andy, and all the children and grandchildren. An avid reader, he enjoyed science fiction, the Chicago Tribune, Discovery, National Geographic, and Reader’s Digest. A sports enthusiast, Gunther skied with the Red Baron and Nomads Ski Clubs, sailed with friends, and cycled to Frankfort for a German beer. He was a dedicated soccer fan and loved cheering on his grandchildren at their sports and school events.
Christmas Eve was a special time of year, filled with family and neighbors he considered extended family. Gunther also enjoyed festive BBQs with family and friends in the warmer months. His weekly visits with his dear friend Bob “Grouch” Klawitter were a cherished tradition. In retirement, Gunther devoted himself to his great-grandchildren, especially Steven and Olivia, whom he affectionately called “Lovey.” He took pride in traveling with Steven to Germany and Disney World, teaching and reading to him, and caring for Ollivia from the day she was born. Gunther wore the bracelets Olivia made for him with immense pride, a testament to his deep love for his family.
Gunther’s warmth, generosity, and zest for life will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Skyline Funeral Home and Memorial Park (24800 S.
