Erik was born to Marge and William and raised in Norwalk. As a young man, he was an exceptional athlete and had great success as a competitive speed skater. He married Dolores Prescott in 1958 and they settled in Norwalk, where they raised their two boys, Jim and Rick. Erik passed his love of sports on to his sons, and for many years he was active in coaching youth baseball and basketball. As a coach, Erik always made sure every child got a chance to play regardless of ability and even went out of his way to provide transportation to those boys who otherwise wouldn’t have rides to games and practices.
Erik worked as a production manager at the Norwalk Hour for over forty years, where he considered his co-workers to be among his very closest friends. One of the great joys of his life was spending time with his granddaughter, Shannon; he was never happier than when he was making her laugh.
Erik is preceded in death by Dolores, and is survived by his two sons, James and Rick, his daughters-in-laws, Mary and Lisa, his granddaughter, Shannon, his great-grandson, Nick, and siblings Margaret Ray, Bill Vonick and Richard Vonick.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 24, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 26 Dodgingtown Rd., Bethel CT 06801. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery on CT-53 in Bethel.
