Gary W. McDermott

Born and raised in White Plains, New York, Gary was the son of the late Thaddeus and Betty McDermott. In 1987, he moved to Connecticut and ultimately was a resident of Shelton, where he made his home with his family.

Gary earned his bachelor's degree from Roger Williams College and began his professional career in New York. Over the course of more than 40 years, he built a successful career in the flooring industry, working with several companies throughout New York and Connecticut. He later joined Lowe's in East Haven, where he worked in the Flooring Department for 10 years until his retirement in 2015.

Above all else, Gary will be remembered for his remarkable strength and resilience, as well as his devotion as a husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law. He was a lifelong and passionate fan of the New York Yankees and delighted in sharing stories with his grandchildren and friends about watching Yankee legends and Hall of Famers play during his youth. He also loved reminiscing about his passion for music and attending Woodstock with his beloved wife, Liz, a story he proudly shared throughout the years.

Gary was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Monahan McDermott. Together, they built a loving family with their daughter, Heather, and shared a lifetime of cherished memories. They are now reunited in heaven.

Gary is survived by his cherished daughter, Heather McDermott Alves, and her husband, Felipe Alves; and by his beloved grandchildren, Mackenzie, Connor, and Liam Alves, who were the absolute pride and joy of his life. He loved them endlessly, and they will miss him every day.

Gary was predeceased by his loving parents and his brothers Richard McDermott , John McDermott and his sister Joan Battipaglia. He is also survived by his sister Linda Tucci, along with many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will remember him with great love.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Scott Huntington and the Smilow Hematology Team of NP7 for the exceptional care, compassion, and support they provided to Gary throughout his 11-year battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. The family is also deeply grateful to Connecticut Hospice and the compassionate caregivers who cared for Gary in his final days.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 11:00am at St Lawrence Catholic Church in Shelton, CT. The family requests that attendees wear navy blue in honor of Gary and his beloved Yankees.A luncheon to celebrate Gary's life will be held after the service.
