He was born to Ella and Joseph Massar in Jersey City, NJ, the youngest of four brothers. George was a gymnast, Navy veteran of WWII, radio and TV technician, fireman, manager and business man, civic volunteer, instrument-rated pilot, avid golfer, and an inveterate tinkerer. As a young Navy radarman serving aboard the USS Missouri, he witnessed the Japanese Surrender in Tokyo Bay.
George was also a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend of many. But more than that, he was a sweet and gentle man, slow to anger, always ready to see the best in people. He was a hard worker and cared deeply about his community, his employees, the world around him. He had a strong sense of ethics and personal responsibility, and took the time to share his skills and experiences with all his children. He had a mischievous sense of humor, and was known for his corny jokes. He loved Frank Sinatra, and was often heard singing along to his favorites.
One of his greatest passions was flying, inspiring all four of his children to become pilots. He met the love of his life, Mary Saray, at a gymnastics exhibition several years after returning from the war. They were married on October 27, 1956. Their four children followed soon after, providing George and Mary with many wonderful adventures, experiences, and a few early gray hairs along the way.
George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary; his daughter, Ella Massar Long and husband Jeff; son Andy and wife Karen; son Thomas and wife Mary; son Steven and wife Sharon; his grandchildren – Erica, Kristin, and Sophie Long; Andrew (wife Brooke), Thomas, Christopher, and Michael Massar; Andrea Kostinas (husband Matthew), Stephen, Eric, and Sarah Massar; Hannah and Benjamin Massar, and Timothy Stehly (wife Sabrina). He is also survived by several great grandchildren: Salvatore Massar, Ryan and Benjamin Kostinas, and Kieran and Parker Stehly. He lived a full and vital life, loved greatly, and made a positive difference in this world. He will be deeply missed.
A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday November 18th at 11am at the Monroe Congregational Church, Church St, Monroe, CT.
