Irene T. Alonza, 88, wife of the late Louis J. Alonza of Monroe, passed into eternal rest on March 8, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Center in Trumbull. Born October 15, 1929, in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Peter J. Finelli and Mary Calvanico Finelli.
Irene worked at Dictaphone Corp and was a ward secretary at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She went on to become a certified nursing assistant for the Trumbull Public Health Nursing Service. Volunteering at the Town of Monroe referendums, as well as the Monroe School District libraries, Irene earned a public service award from the Secretary of State for her valuable contributions. Irene was active, healthy, and very much involved with the Monroe community and her family up until a few months before her death of congestive heart failure.
Irene enjoyed her family, her friends, cooking, dancing and loved to sing. She was the life of every party she attended, often wearing hats and offering others party favors to set the mood. She always managed to encourage everyone around her to join in the fun that she started. Irene was a one-of-a-kind cook, Italian being her specialty, and antipasto being her all time requested bring along. Irene shattered all expectations of how an elder would live independently, being she was a widow. She maintained a beautiful condominium in Monroe, Connecticut, where she decorated with the utmost in taste and had a place for every one of her collectibles, which showcased her love for theater, dance and appreciation for culture.
Until October of 2017, Irene was always there to help her beloved family. Often she was called upon at the spur of the moment, and could be found picking up her grandchildren from their schools and taking them to their appointments, capping it off with a trip to McDonald’s. This was just one of many ways Irene could be relied upon by her family. Irene was truly full of life, selflessly giving to others. Ultimately, Irene’s firm faith and love of God helped her to effortlessly glide through life, always reflecting the light of His spirit everywhere she went.
Irene was a loving mother to her son Brian J. Alonza, Sr. and his wife Annamarie of Oxford; her daughter Cheryl M. Kendy of Monroe; granddaughter Amy Blanchard and her husband Brian of Naugatuck, grandson Brian Alonza, Jr. and his girlfriend Christine Nunes of Seymour. Granddaughters Cassandra and Andrea Kendy and grandson Joseph Kendy, IV, of Monroe; great grandson Niko Alonza and great granddaughter Juliana Alonza.
