Jane was born on February 26, 1932, in Syracuse, New York, to Rose and Anthony Zrebiec. She grew up in upstate New York, where she developed a lifelong love of family, nature, and adventure.
Jane worked as an Executive Assistant at General Electric in Syracuse, where she met her future husband, Wells Williamson Straub, affectionately known as “Bill.” Together they built a life centered on family and eventually made their home in Connecticut. Jane and Bill shared a love of the outdoors and spent many happy years skiing, sailing, and hiking in the Adirondack Mountains, creating memories that she cherished throughout her life.
Jane earned an associate degree in business and was known for her determination, independence, kindness, and devotion to those she loved. She took great pride in her work as an Executive Assistant and in creating a warm and welcoming home for her family. A longtime member of St. Stephen’s Church, Jane found joy in both simple pleasures and special experiences. She loved gardening, arranging flowers, decorating her home, taking walks in the park, exercising, and traveling to New York City to attend plays.
Her greatest joy was her family. Jane adored her grandsons, Alex DeMarrais and Nate DeMarrais, and took immense pride in watching them grow into remarkable young men. She cherished the time she spent with them and loved hearing about their lives and accomplishments.
Jane also had a special affection for her granddog, Scrumpy Jill, whom she lovingly called “Grandma’s little girl.” Scrumpy’s visits always brought a smile to her face and added to the happiness she found in being surrounded by those she loved.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Anthony Zrebiec; her brother, Tony Zrebiec Jr.; her sister, Eleanor Zrebiec; and her beloved husband, Wells Williamson Straub (“Bill”), known lovingly to his grandchildren as “Papa Bill.”
She is survived by her son, Philip Straub and his wife, Monica Straub; her daughter, Susan Straub and her partner, Daniel Stetson; and her cherished grandsons, Alex DeMarrais and Nate DeMarrais. She also leaves behind extended family members and friends who will treasure her memory.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at St. John’s Cemetery, 500 Moose Hill Road, Monroe, Connecticut.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate aides, hospice staff, and the team at Spring Meadows for the care, comfort, and dignity they provided during Jane’s final weeks. Their kindness and support meant so much to Jane and her family.
Jane was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. She will be remembered for her strength, her adventurous spirit, her devotion to family, and the many happy memories she created with those she loved. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
