Janet grew up in Ridgewood, NJ. Daughter of William and Alice Westervelt, she graduated from Ridgewood High School, Berkley Secretarial College, and Western Connecticut State University. She worked at Jones and Laughlin Steel Company and went on to become a transaction coordinator with William Pitt Real Estate. Janet was always very athletic starting as a high school twirler and soccer player. She enjoyed pickleball and golf through adulthood, but her true passion was tennis. She spent her youth as an avid USTA tennis player and attended the US Open in NYC every year for over 40 years with family and friends. She enjoyed book club, garden club, dance, and Mahjong. She also volunteered for many years at the Slough Nature Preserve in Fort Myers, FL. Her kids and grandkids meant the world to her, and she was very close to all her family.
Janet was a very caring person. She always had a smile for everyone and was always sensitive to everyone’s feelings. Family events were a big part of her life. Holidays, birthdays and Sunday night dinners at her daughter and sons-in-law’s home in Newtown brought her so much joy. She enjoyed spending winters in Florida with her husband and having friends, children and grandchildren visit. She leaves behind her husband of 50 years, Richard Spann of Monroe and Fort Myers, FL, daughter Lauren Roy (Son-in-law, Adam Roy) grandchildren Olivia and Austen of Newtown, son Craig Spann (Daughter-in-law, Nikki Spann) step grandchildren, Jocelyn and Evan of Monroe, and sister, Barbara Horbatt of Annandale, NJ.
