

Joseph was born on May 31, 1935, in Manhattan to George Cervini and Anna Sirni. He grew up in Yorkville on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where his faith, family, and neighborhood helped shape the man he would become. Raised as a devout Roman Catholic, Joseph attended St. Jean Baptiste, serving as an altar boy throughout his eight years there.
He later graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, NY. Joseph continued his education at St. Francis University in Loretto, PA, where he met fellow student Gloria Delehant of New Haven, Connecticut. During their college years, Joseph courted and pinned Gloria. After college, Joseph began his service as an officer in the United States Navy.
Joseph proudly served on active duty from 1957 to 1961 aboard the USS William W. Wood (DDR-715) and remained in service until his honorable discharge in 1968. In recognition of his military service, he was awarded the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal in 2008. Joseph and Gloria were married on July 23, 1960, at St. Francis Church in New Haven, CT. They began their married life in Newport, RI, where Joseph worked at the Naval Academy Preparatory School. They later settled in Monroe, CT, where they built their home, raised their family, and became part of the community they would call home for decades. Joseph went on to enjoy a career of more than 35 years with People’s Bank, retiring as Vice President of Mortgage Services.
Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Delehant Cervini. He is survived by his brother, Robert Cervini; his children, Laura Cervini; Lisa Burns and children; Joseph Cervini and Cindy Cervini and their children, Zachary Cervini, Tyler Cervini, and Jillian Cervini; Judith Cervini and her daughters, Glorianna Restrepo and Karinna Poma; and Robert Cervini; his dear friend and companion, Trudy Baggs; and his beloved dog, Rosco.
Family and friends may pay their respects from 9:30–11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, at Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher and Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT. A Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Jude’s Parish, 707 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT. Joseph will then be laid to rest with military honors at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 1056 Daniels Farm Road,Trumbull, CT. Arrangements are by Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher and Son Community Funeral Home.
Joseph was a proud donor, and those wishing to honor his memory may make a memorial contribution to the ASPCA, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or St. Joseph’s Indian School.
