
Sister M. Mercedes Zachorowski of Monroe passed away peacefully on October 5, 2011 after a brief illness. Sister Mercedes, the former Casimira Zachorowski, was born in Brooklyn, NY the seventh of eight children born to Marion and Marianne Zachorowski. Sister attended Our Lady of Czestochowa Elementary School and Brooklyn Vocational Training High School, Brooklyn, NY. Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth on August 29, 1935 and was assigned to teach at St. Stanislaus School, New Haven, CT. During the summer months, Sister attended college classes and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Villanova University, PA and a Masters Degree in Special Education from Columbia University, NY. Sister Mercedes career spanned 43 years; as an elementary school teacher for 34 years, an elementary principal for nine years and Child Care Worker at Little Flower Institute, Wading River, NY for four years. Sister retired to Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent, Monroe, CT in 2008. Sister is survived by her nieces: Victoria Lukawski, Christine Baksa, Theresa Dobies, Lucille Curtin, Anne Petersen, her nephew-Joseph Zachorowski and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent, Monroe at 11 am. Interment will follow at the Holy Family Cemetery, Monroe.
