Originally from The Netherlands, Nora and Gil immigrated to the USA with their two daughters in November of 1956. Nora and Gil were inseparable. Everything they did was together-hiking, tennis, sailing on Long Island Sound in their little sunfish sailboat, walking along the walk at St Mary's By The Sea, ballroom dancing and going to the Westport YMCA every Mon and Wed night where Gil was the fitness instructor.
Nora was the original women's rights advocate, insisting on playing volleyball with the guys at the Y, working on her tennis serve so she could beat Gil, and speaking up loudly at things she felt were unfair. Nora was the strong rudder on their life sailboat, pushing Gil to be the best he could be. Nora did the activity planning-where they would travel, which restaurants they would eat at, and who they would go with. Gil was game for everything except agreeing to sell out and move to a warmer climate. The only "No" forcefully said. The compromise was a warm vacation spot every Feb.-Aruba or Barbados etc.
Theirs was a special togetherness rarely seen. They were still holding hands on their 67th wedding anniversary. Maybe because of their love of exercise, active sports and a "Prevention Magazine" diet ,they remained active and in good health to their 90's.
In their middle years, Nora worked as a library assistant at Yale University . Gil worked as Technical Director of the division of Sciences at Yale.
In her last years Nora was cared for at home by her daughter, Nancy Gost of Bridgeport with frequent visits from her other daughter, Edith Deese of Dobson ,NC. When her care needs increased ,she had wonderful 24 hour caregivers who loved her and became family. We thank Sharon Craddock, Liz Fletcher and Sylvia Harris for their patient, loving care that allowed our Mom to remain in her home with dignity.
We will so miss the strong, stubbornly independent and humorous woman who was our beloved mother and grandmother but are comforted knowing she went to sleep and awakened with her Gil.
Nora leaves behind her two daughters-Nancy N. Gost of Bridgeport and Edith L. Deese of Dobson,NC and their respective husbands-Robert Gost and Raymond Deese. She leaves her three grandsons-Carlo M .DeAngelus and wife Ramona of Morganton, NC, Jason R Gost of Menasha, Wisconsin and Marco V. DeAngelus of Burkburnett, Texas. She also leaves behind great granddaughters Angelina DeAngelus of Ashville, NC and Elsie DeAngelus of Witchita Falls, TX along with step great granddaughter Kristin Hess and great great step grandson Shiloh Hess both of Old Fort, NC.
Nora will be joyfully remembered by all. November will always be a special month for us.
