Born in Bridgeport on August 25, 1946, to the late William and Margaret (Boroskey) Breza, Bob moved with his family to Trumbull at an early age. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 1964, where he excelled in both football and baseball.
In 1965, Bob was drafted and enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving aboard the USS Waccamaw, an oil tanker out of Norfolk, Virginia. There he attained the rank of Boatswain’s Mate Third Class and completed multiple Mediterranean (“Med”) cruises with the Sixth Fleet. He later continued his service aboard the USS Opportune before being honorably discharged in January 1968.
During his time at sea, Bob played a key role in refueling large aircraft carriers and battleships throughout the Mediterranean. His deployments allowed him to visit Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, and other ports in the Caribbean. While in the Navy, he also continued his interest in athletics, learning weightlifting and participating in organized boxing.
Shortly after returning home, Bob began a career in the building trades by joining the Local 210 Carpenters Union in Bridgeport. Mechanically inclined and a natural problem-solver, this path suited him well.
On January 22, 1972, Bob married Mary (Vincenzi) of Bridgeport—an anniversary they would share for 54 years to the day. In 1973, they moved to Monroe, where they built a life together and raised their family. That same year, Bob started his own company, Robert J. Breza, Builders, later renamed Breza Builders, LLC. The company thrived for decades, building more than 50 homes and completing countless renovations across Fairfield, New Haven, and Litchfield Counties. Bob forged long-lasting relationships with customers, vendors, employees, and subcontractors, earning a reputation as one of the area’s most respected builders. His unique combination of drill sergeant toughness and comedic timing kept every jobsite lively and every crew member on their toes.
Outside of work, Bob was happiest in the outdoors. Whether it was fishing for dinner at Rowledge Pond, or an unforgettable trip to the Florida Keys or Cabo San Lucas, he cherished any time spent hunting, fishing, and enjoying nature—especially alongside his sons. He remained committed to staying physically active throughout his life through weightlifting and outdoor pursuits.
Though he carried a tough exterior, those who knew Bob understood his heart was truly generous. He was always willing to go the extra mile for others, professionally or personally. Many were touched by his kindness, humor, and loyalty. If you were lucky enough to spend time with him, you likely heard one of his unforgettable stories or shared a memory that brought him joy.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his sons, Jason Breza and wife Heather of Newtown, and David Breza and wife Catherine of Stratford; and his cherished grandchildren, Savanna, Jacob, and Max.
