

Sister Olimpia, the former Helen Nowakowska, was born in Worcester, MA the oldest of eight children born to Joseph and Valerie ( Moroz ) Nowakowski. Sister attended St. Mary’s Elementary School in Worcester before entering Nazareth Academy High School in Philadelphia, PA. After graduating from high school, Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth on March 19, 1926. Sister Olimpia studied at the University in Krakow, Poland and Villanova University, PA earning degrees in Library Science and Languages with a concentration in Polish and Latin. Upon returning to America, Sister Olimpia taught in several schools in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Jersey. After forty years as a classroom teacher, Sister semi-retired in 1978 to run the gift shop at the provincialate in Monroe, Connecticut until retiring in 2002. Sister Olimpia celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends on May 9, 2011. A few short weeks after reaching the age of 101, Sister fell ill and passed away peacefully on August 21, 2012. Sister is survived by her sister, Victoria DiLeo, of Worcester, MA; nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on August 23, 2012 at 11 AM at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent, Monroe.
