Virginia was born on June 6, 1935, in the Bronx, New York, to Anthony and Elizabeth Carroll. She is survived by her loving daughters, Patty Gaffney and Janet Hames, son-in-law Jody Hames, sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and James Ledeoux, sister-in-law Judith Kolt, her grandchildren, Bobby Gaffney and Katy Gaffney, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Virginia is predeceased by her husband, James Joseph Gaffney II, her sons, James (Jimmy) Gaffney, III, and Robert (Bobby) Gaffney, and her sisters, Joanne Schulz and Patricia Carroll.
Virginia and her husband Jim went to high school in the Bronx and worked for General Electric Company. With Jim’s job, they moved around New England and came to Monroe in 1975. She worked in real estate in Monroe for many years, and later became a real estate appraiser. She was kind, generous, intelligent, funny and a source of knowledge and understanding to anyone that needed advice or guidance. She was admired and respected by her friends and co-workers for her honesty, strength, and wise spirit.
Virginia was hardworking and strong in her faith, instilling these attributes in her children. She also was an avid reader and loved nature, flowers, gardening, painting, music and the ocean. She was a truly special person that loved with her whole heart. She will be dearly missed but her family knows that she is at peace and with her beloved husband and sons.
A memorial service celebrating Virginia’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Monroe Congregational Church, 34 Church Street, Monroe. Pastor Jennifer Gingras will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
