Avery A. Fulcher, 92, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2022. He was born on December 9, 1929, in Snoqualmie, WA, to John Alex and Elsie Fulcher. Avery was raised in the Florence Acres area north of Monroe and graduated from Monroe High School, class of 1949.
After graduating high school Avery moved to Oakland, California to start his career for Southern Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher. Soon after, during the Korean conflict he was called to duty and served two years in the US Army as a radio operator. He was stationed in San Luis Obispo, California. He was discharged in 1953. Soon after returning to Monroe, he met and married Dixie Bowden of Sultan, where they eventually settled, and he remained until his death.
Avery had many interests, and very rarely did he only have one job at a time. During the 60s, Avery was the bill room supervisor for the Washington State Legislature. During the 70s and 80s, in addition to logging he kept himself busy with numerous business ventures. Avery farmed raspberries on the family farm, split and sold cedar and ridge shakes. He also milled the wood for his woodworking projects. Later, he designed and built many types of log furniture (beds, dressers, nightstands), cedar deck furniture, and installed stair/loft railing in log homes. Also, in the 80s and early 90s, Avery worked seasonally in logging camps in Alaska. While there, he found he had a talent for carving and created several fantastic art pieces. In the mid-90s, Avery retired from the logging industry and was able to turn his focus to what he loved the most, his passion for woodworking. He successfully operated his woodworking business “Sky Valley Wood Works”.
Avery enjoyed spending time in his workshop utilizing his creative hand, ingenuity, and MacGyver skills to invent, re-invent, and re-engineer everything from a bowl of soup to a perfectly built tool or machine. Avery was a true old timer who loved to share history, stories, ideas, and jokes with his friends, family and customers, many of whom he created and continued a long-time friendship with. His wisdom, quick wit, and friendship will truly be missed.
Avery was survived by son Randy (Sandy) Fulcher of Qatar, daughter Neenah (Steve) Hancock of Sanger CA, son Jim Fulcher of Sultan, son John Fulcher of Sultan, and daughter Lisa Fulcher of Clovis CA. His brothers John (Bob) and Earlaine of Snohomish and Gary of Monroe, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Avery was preceded in death by his wife Dixie, daughter Lynn Ell, and long-time companion Dolly Cummins. His parents John and Elsie, brother Bill, and sisters Evelyn and CharEll.
Avery will be laid to rest at Sultan Cemetery in a private service with family.
