Carl was born on December 24, 1952, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Carl and Isabel Schiffeler. He grew up in upstate New York and the Bronx. After high school he spent one year in Nepal trekking, hiking and rafting. He then moved to Montana to attend college and to be in an area where he had ample opportunity to do the outdoor activities he enjoyed.
On October 28, 1978, he married, Judy Carter. They lived in Montana for several years then moved to Washington state for work. Carl was an HVAC contractor in the greater Seattle area from 1986 until the time of his passing.
Survivors include his wife, Judy of Snohomish; three sisters, Alice (Matthew) Nelson of Boston, MA, Sarah (Daniel Katz) Schiffeler of Rochester, NY, and Mary Weiss of Davis CA.
