He was 44. Doug is survived by his parents Lonnie and Kathy Knox, sister Kimberly Loomis and her husband Bradford, nieces and nephew Kaeleigh, Paige and Loren, his 92 year old Grandma Mary McCallum, 95 year old Grandpa Charles and Lois Knox.
Have you ever met someone who was so disarmingly friendly and joyful that even after knowing them for only a few minutes you felt like you had known them your whole life?
Douglas Knox was such a person.
After 3 months in foster care he was adopted by Lonnie and Kathy October 28, 1975. Doug navigated his childhood full of brazen impetuousness that was always tempered by deep love for his family and friends. He would get into trouble with some of his teachers for his sassy back talk but he was beloved by many of them for the same. Doug attended school in California, Saudi Arabia, Hawaii and graduated at Leonardtown High School Maryland with some Criminal Justice courses at ECC in Washington. One could never assert that Doug didn’t stand up for what he believed in because he always did. (Just try claiming there was a better breakfast cafe in Washington than Jake’s. He’d set you straight in a heartbeat!)
Douglas loved his family and was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, cousin and uncle. He adored all the family pets and every CCI pup his parents trained. We all knew that if we needed anything, he would be there for us. He received Christ at a early age under the leadership of his Grandma Ruby. As regular greeter at Cascade Community Church in Monroe, he was beloved by his church family as well. People would line up to get one of his patented Big Guy hugs. All of this love was an extension of the love he had for God.
Doug was infinitely proud of his job at Boeing, telling everyone, “I’m following in my Dad’s footsteps.”. He celebrated five years with the company in May and felt working there was one of the best decisions he made for himself. His co-workers were like family.
Music made Doug’s world go round, he had an extensive digital music library that spanned almost every genre there is. If you were lucky enough to ride with him in his truck, you could hear everything from Skillet to Queen to Enya in a ten minute trip.
He enjoyed cheering on the Seahawks and Mariners at their stadiums, from home or on a barstool at Ixtapa in Monroe. He was a true fan who supported the teams even when they weren’t champions. You didn’t even have to watch football on TV, if you followed Doug on Facebook you’d know about every touchdown the Seahawks scored!
Doug had so many dear friends on the local police force and sheriff departments and supported veterans as well. He always made sure to call his Dad and WWII veteran Grandpa on Veterans Day. He loved doing visits to the VA hospital with his Mom and therapy dog, Ocho and placing flags at the cemetery with his Dad.
Doug also loved sunsets, often sharing photos of the brilliant twilight only the Pacific Northwest can display. Similarly, as the sun has set on his life, we share remembrance of not only Doug’s colorful, unique brilliance but a reminder that after the darkness, light comes again. We know that our beloved son, brother, uncle and friend is now basking in the most beautiful light, with his friends and family who have gone before him and his Heavenly Father who has now called him home.
