Bill and his family endured the Great Depression, but they enjoyed swimming in the local river and lakes, and were good athletes.
After graduating from Monroe High School in 1941, he worked at the Port of Embarkation in Seattle. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on Dec. 7, 1942. He became a fighter pilot graduating in Pilot Class 44-E. He did not go overseas, but did do essential flying duties stateside, including Project TOPARO.
In 1946 he married Sonja Carlson. They raised two children in Monroe. Bill became the first walking letter carrier in Monroe, and later was appointed by President Kennedy to be Postmaster of Monroe, which he worked at until his retirement.
In retirement Bill and Sonja enjoyed family, friends, golf and travel.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents Charles Rutherford Boyes and Emilie Anna Boyes, his brothers Bob Boyes and Calvin Boyes, his sister Mabel Neisinger, wife Sonja, and son William C. Boyes.
He is survived by his brother Mervin Boyes, son Dick Boyes (Laura), grandchildren Ricky Boyes, Katie Boyes (David Holmberg), and Teresa J. Boyes, great granddaughter Amelia Holmberg, and many relatives.
At his request no funeral is planned, however, he does want the family to gather at his grave and recite the Lord’s Prayer and 23rd Psalm on a sunny day.
