Helen Louise Fouts
November 21, 2020
Helen was an only child born in San Mateo, California, to Marcel and Bernice Thomas on Dec 3, 1932. The family resided in San Bruno before relocating to the Los Angeles area. She graduated from Downey High in 1950 and married Robert Gillespie in 1951. They had two daughters before his death in 1959. Helen then married Robert Fouts in 1963 and was widowed again in 1998.
Despite these challenges, she lived a happy life in Downey, Hemet, Redlands and Yucaipa. She loved her family, pets, Hummel Figurines, shopping, reading, puzzles, playing Scrabble, bridge and other card games.
She was very involved in volunteer activities, especially following the death of her younger daughter, Janet Benson in 2003. In 2016, Helen moved to Plymouth Village in Redlands where she made many new friends.
Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in early 2019, we began our long goodbye. She passed away on November 17th just 10 days after testing positive for Covid-19, while living in the Memory Care wing of Wildwood Canyon Villa in Yucaipa.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Karen Addicks, son-in-law of 49 years, Bob Addicks, grandchildren, Michael Benson (Tricia), Jeff Addicks (Stephanie), Rebecca Addicks Salerno (Nick), Daniel Addicks (Darcey), Stacey Benson and was recently preceded in death by Cary Benson. Helen was a doting “GG” to Katie, Brady, Emma, Ari, Evie, Emily and Drew. She was a step-mother, as well, to Debbie, Julie, and Judy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when it is safer to gather. Helen will be laid to rest next to Robert Gillespie.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice with a preference for those that benefit children or animals.
