James Martin Hirz

Born the seventh of eight children, Jim grew up in a lively, close-knit home filled with laughter. His quick wit and easy humor became defining parts of who he was—if you spent time with Jim, you likely laughed together.

Jim shared nearly 38 years of marriage with the love of his life, Carol Hirz (née Nonnemacker). He was a proud father to Matt (Kara) and found immeasurable joy in becoming “G-Pa” to Duff and Ruby. His grandchildren were his greatest delight, and he faced his illness with determination, wanting to be with them as long as possible.

He is survived by his brothers Tom (Dee), Bob (Sue), Ken (Rita), Dave (Julie), and Mike (Alene), and his sister Linda Hirz Withers (Breck). He was a beloved uncle to many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Len and Pat Hirz, and his brother, John Joseph Hirz.

Jim attended the University of Cincinnati, where his lifelong fondness for Skyline Chili began, and later completed his degree at the University of Heidelberg through the University of California/Long Beach.

He began his career in the grocery business, building the strong work ethic that shaped his life, and later discovered a passion for videography, where his creativity and entrepreneurial spirit flourished.

Service to others was central to Jim’s life. His involvement with Kiwanis International began in high school and continued for decades across Ohio, Georgia, and Florida. He gave quietly and generously, always focused on strengthening his community.

Jim found joy in simple traditions—weekly cornhole games, card nights with family and friends, and especially cooking. He spent countless hours crafting meals with care and creativity, and nothing made him happier than seeing others enjoy what he made.

Jim’s faith guided him deeply. Active in The Point Church, Cocoa Beach, FL he leaned on God’s love throughout his illness. His quiet trust, grateful heart, and daily prayers for others left a lasting example of humility and compassion.

He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, faith, perseverance, and selfless service that will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.

A private family celebration of life will be held this summer, with another Celebration of Life planned in Cocoa Beach, Florida October 10, 2026.
