Julio Varela

Julio César Varela Franco nació en la ciudad de Granada, Nicaragua, el 11 de abril de 1933. Hijo primogénito de Ulises Varela y Mercedes Franco. Cursó sus estudios en el Instituto Salesiano de Granada, al completar su educación se trasladó a la capital, Managua, donde obtuvo su Diploma de Contabilidad y administración de empresa en 1958. A partir de esa fecha, ejerció como contador y administrador de una fábrica de baterías llamada ‘Baterias Hasbani’. En diciembre, 1959, contrajo matrimonio con Carmen León, procreando 6 hijos.

Después de trabajar 15 años en ‘Baterías Hasbani’, Julio decide trabajar por su cuenta como empresario y abre, con su esposa, Carmen, su primer negocio propio en Ciudad Jardín. Este negocio, de electrodomésticos, se llamaba VARCO (Varela Company). En estos tiempos, Julio y Carmen también habían comprado casa propia en dicha ciudad. Después del terremoto de Managua de 1972, la familia Varela León compra casa y se muda a Altamira D'este. Es en estos tiempos en que Julio y Carmen abren su segundo negocio propio. Este nuevo negocio es un restaurante de comida Nicaragüense que se encuentra en el centro comercial ‘Camino de Oriente’. El restaurante es nombrado como ‘La Plancha del Camino’. Julio y Carmen habían ya triunfado en Nicaragua al ser propietarios de viviendas y negocios.

Pero por motivos de la guerra civil en Nicaragua en el año 1979, Julio emigra a Estados Unidos ese mismo año en el mes de Julio. Su familia eventualmente emigra también a Estados Unidos en marzo de 1983. Y desde ese entonces, la familia Varela León, nunca volvió a estar separada otra vez. Como todo inmigrante que viene a Estados Unidos buscando un futuro mejor, Julio tuvo que comenzar de nuevo y desde abajo a la edad de 46 años. Él tuvo que aprender Inglés y también tuvo que entrenarse para poder trabajar en otras empresas.

Para salir adelante, Julio se emplea en una empresa llamada American Home Products. Esta compañía vende artículos de cocina marca Vita Craft, y Julio inmediatamente sobresale como agente de ventas de dicha compañía. Al obtener su licencia como agente de seguros de vida, Julio se emplea en American National Insurance Company, destacándose por su alto volumen en ventas, siendo merecedor de premios y viajes. Su espíritu inquebrantable de superación e independencia lo impulsa a fundar su propia firma, Julio Varela Tax Service, donde desempeña como preparador de declaraciones impuestos y notario público. En 1994, Julio y Carmen compran casa propia en City of Commerce, California. Así consiguen en el sueño Americano para su familia.

Julio Varela siempre fue una persona muy activa en su trabajo y también en los deportes. Julio participó en las actividades deportivas, como softball y boliche, de su centro de personas adultas mayores de City of Commerce, California. También le gustaba jugar billar y tenis, y su equipo favorito de baseball era Los Dodgers de Los Ángeles.

En agosto de 2004, a los 71 años de edad, Julio tuvo una cirugía cardiaca de bypass cuádruple. Un día, mientras se recuperaba en el hospital, entra una persona en su habitación y le da El Cuerpo de Cristo. Desde ese momento, Julio tiene una transformación espiritual. Al terminar su recuperación, empieza a asistir a la Santa Misa todos los domingos, y eventualmente, todos los días, a la Iglesia de San Marcelino, en Commerce, CA., y después de un tiempo, empieza a servir como sacristán, como lector, como Ministro de Eucaristía, llevando El Cuerpo de Cristo a enfermos y personas que no podían salir de casa para ir a la Santa Misa. También ayuda en velas de difuntos guiando a la congregación en el Santo Rosario, e ingresa al grupo de The Holy Name Society, de dicha parroquia. También ingresa al grupo de la Divina Misericordia, y eventualmente llega a ser coordinador de dicho grupo.

En enero del 2019, por complicaciones de salud, Julio deja la coordinación del grupo de la Divina Misericordia. Y cinco años después, a menos de un mes de cumplir los 91 años de edad, Julio pasa a presencia del Señor, el día Martes 19 de marzo, del 2024, a las 12:35am, después de la medianoche.

Julio ya está reunido con su hija Carmen, quien falleció en junio del 2019, y es sobrevivido por su esposa Carmen y sus hijos Julio César, Carlos y su esposa Nila, Jorge y su esposa Verónica, José, Ricardo y su esposa Wendy, 6 nietos: Julio César, Enrique, Richard, Edward, Breanna, y Shawn, y una bisnieta: London Rose, y muchos hermanos, primos, y sobrinos en diferentes partes de Estados Unidos y Nicaragua.

Julio César Varela Franco was born in the city of Granada, Nicaragua, on April 11, 1933. He was the eldest son of Ulises Varela and Mercedes Franco. He studied at the Salesian Institute of Granada, and after completing his education he moved to the capital, Managua, where he obtained his Diploma in Accounting and Business Administration in 1958. From that date on, he worked as an accountant and administrator of 'Baterias Hasbani' battery factory. In December 1959, he married Carmen León and had 6 children.

After working for 15 years at ‘Baterias Hasbani', Julio decided to work on his own as an entrepreneur and opened, with his wife Carmen, his first business in Ciudad Jardín. This home appliance business was called VARCO (Varela Company). At that time, Julio and Carmen had also bought their own house in that city. After the 1972 Managua earthquake, the Varela León family bought a house and moved to Altamira D'Este. It was during this time that Julio and Carmen opened their second business of their own. This new business is a Nicaraguan food restaurant that is located in the 'Camino de Oriente' shopping center. The restaurant is named 'La Plancha del Camino'. Julio and Carmen were now successful in Nicaragua owning their own home and business.

But due to the civil war in Nicaragua in 1979, Julio emigrated to the United States that same year in July. His family eventually emigrated to the United States in March 1983. And since then, the Varela León family was never separated again. Like every immigrant who comes to the United States looking for a better future, Julio had to start again from the bottom at the age of 46. He had to learn English and also had to train to be able to work in other companies.

To get ahead, Julio starts working at a company called American Home Products. This company sells Vita Craft brand kitchenware, and Julio immediately stands out as a sales agent for the company. After obtaining his license as a life insurance agent, Julio was employed by American National Insurance Company, standing out for his high volume in sales, being worthy of awards and trips. His unwavering spirit of self-improvement and independence drives him to establish his own firm, ‘Julio Varela Tax Service’, where he works as a tax return preparer and notary public. In 1994, Julio and Carmen bought their own home in City of Commerce, California, achieving the American dream for their family.

Julio was always very active in his work and in sports. Julio participated in sports activities, such as softball and bowling, at his senior center in City of Commerce, California. He also enjoyed playing pool and tennis, and his favorite baseball team was the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In August 2004, at the age of 71, Julio had quadruple bypass heart surgery. One day, while he was recovering in the hospital, a person came into his room and gave him The Body of Christ. At that moment, Julio has a spiritual transformation. At the end of his recovery, he began to attend Holy Mass every Sunday, and eventually every day, at St. Marcellinus Church, in Commerce, CA., he then began to serve as a sacristan, as a lector, as a Minister of the Eucharist, bringing The Body of Christ to the sick and people who could not leave their home to go to Holy Mass. He also helps in vigils for the deceased by guiding the congregation in the Holy Rosary, and joins the group of The Holy Name Society, of that parish. He also joins the Divine Mercy group, and eventually becomes the group's coordinator.

In January 2019, due to health complications, Julio left the coordination of the Divine Mercy group. And five years later, less than a month shy of his 91st birthday, Julio passes into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 12:35 a.m., after midnight.

Julio is already reunited with his daughter Carmen, who passed away in June of 2019, and is survived by his wife Carmen and his sons Julio Cesar, Carlos and his wife Nila, Jorge and his wife Veronica, José, Ricardo and his wife Wendy, 6 grandchildren: Julio Cesar, Enrique, Richard, Edward, Breanna, and Shawn, and a great-granddaughter: London Rose, and many siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews in different parts of the United States and Nicaragua.

A Viewing and Rosary for Julio will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2024 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at St. Marcellinus Catholic Church, 2349 Strong Avenue, Commerce, California 90040. A Holy Mass will occur Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM, 2349 Strong Avenue, Commerce, California 90040.
