The family eventually moved to Sanger, CA, where Virginia grew up with 13 siblings, one of whom died in infancy. Economic circumstances were sometimes challenging but Virginia’s childhood days were happy ones & she cherished each member of her family.
Virginia frequently visited her cousins in Los Angeles (Familia Aragon) where she met the family next door (Familia Carreon). She married Jess Carreon Jr. on 8/20/55 & thereafter made a loving home with him in Los Angeles. A daughter, Christine Ann, was born to them the following year, completing the family that included Jess’ daughter, Susan.
1959 & 1960 brought tragedy to the Ortiz family when Virginia’s sister passed away due to illness & two brothers passed in a car accident. Jess & Virginia remained close to her family, making numerous trips each year to Sanger & San Diego to visit. In Los Angeles, they were equally close to Jess’ seven siblings & their spouses. They spent countless hours with good friends & traveled occasionally with family & friends in the United States & Mexico & once to Spain/Portugal.
Jess & Virginia opened Accent Carpets, a flooring company, in approximately 1960. They worked long hours, side by side, operating the business until Jess’ death in January 2007. Virginia wore multiple hats, acting as secretary, sales person, accountant at their business & wife, mother, cook, housekeeper & chauffeur at their home.
Christine’s marriage gave Virginia three grandchildren she adored & spoiled, Rick, Jessica & Eric. They spent most of their vacation/holiday time with their grandparents, in the pool, at Accent Carpets, shopping, dining out. They especially enjoyed her wonderful cooking, tamales, menudo, macaroni salad, tacos & spaghetti. Virginia’s step-grandchildren, Mario, Marcus & Michael, loved her meals as well.
After Jess’ unexpected passing, Virginia moved to San Diego with Christine in February 2007 but then suffered a stroke that took away her ability to read & caused mild difficulty with vocabulary. It was hard for her to leave her family, friends & familiar surroundings & she was devastated at the loss of her beloved Jess but proved to be a wonderful housemate & patient. She had many happy times in San Diego with Christine, her grandchildren, her two brothers & their families & was able to travel to Los Angeles & Sanger every now & then.
Christine had the honor to care for Virginia for almost seven years with the assistance of several loving caregivers & the hospice program (for an astonishing 20 months!) & brothers/sister-in-law Ray, Elayne & Joe. Virginia was reunited with her Jess at 3:25 a.m. on 12/11/13 with Christine & Caregiver Cecilia at her bedside & was certainly greeted by all her loved ones who had passed before her including her parents in 1979, a sister in 2002 & another in 2013. May she rest in peace with God & all his angels.
