

Andrew Harrison Roberts of Gardendale, Alabama, 54, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at the VA Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Andrew was a veteran of the United States Army (detailed below).
Andrew is survived by his loving Sister, Deanna Roberts Taylor (Shawn) of Pinson, Alabama; Brothers, Samuel Hollis Roberts, Jr. of Mesa, Arizona and Daniel Clinton Roberts (Kala) of Foley, Alabama; Nieces, Jessica Calloway (Johnathan), Haley Farris (Brad), Meagan McDonald (Morgan), and Landyn Taylor; Great Nephew, Hayden Posten, Great Nieces, Brooke, Bryana, and Lainey Calloway; as well as a host of adoptive Nieces and Nephews over the years; and his beloved Brother and Friend, Matthew Smith (Mary Ann, Tristan and Tara).
Andrew was born June 29, 1970 in Houston, Texas to the late Dr. Samuel Hollis Roberts and Ann Elaine Roberts. At the age of six, he moved to Gardendale, Alabama. He attended Gardendale schools for elementary and middle school. He attended Gardendale High School until coming to realize the institution no longer had anything further to offer his academic pursuits. He would complete his high school diploma after joining the United States Army.
He served the US Army with distinction, including: deployment in Desert Shield/Desert Storm with 6th Cavalry (an Aviation Brigade), which was part of the 1st Cavalry Division on a 3-year enlistment (1990-1993). He served again, from 2007—2011, when he was deployed again (2009-2010) as part of the Global War on Terror. His Southwest Asia Service Medal has three stars (3 campaigns) and he earned 3 Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, and a Good Conduct Medal.
After his first tenure in the Army, Andrew studied biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and then completed his studies at the University of South Alabama, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health and Human Services.
He worked a wide variety of fascinating professions including: wild hog eradication, studying the industrial and military impacts on habitats of the red-headed woodpecker, environmental cleanup in post-Katrina New Orleans, and many other fulfilling jobs, to include volunteer service at the Veteran’s Administration in Birmingham, Alabama.
Andrew held a life-long love of music that he shared passionately with his friends and family. He traveled the United States, far and wide. He planned his travels to find the best locations to view eclipses, meteors and comets, and any major astronomical occurrences. Though he mostly traveled to visit the many friends and family he so loved.
In addition, the family wishes to thank some of the people who were present and caring in Andrew’s last days including (but not limited to) Jason Limbaugh, Delores Stacks, Laura Walker, Geoff and Sarah Bolen, Katie Wall, Stephanie Call, the amazing staff on the 6th floor at the VA, especially Dr. Leslie Avant and Mary Gurganus.
His life will be honored and remembered through the music he so cherished, the brilliant night sky, the service of veterans, and most of all, his laughter and warm words of love and encouragement to countless people blessed by having known Andy.
A visitation for Andy will be held Thursday, April 24, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo), 3715 Highway 25, Montevallo, AL 35115 with a memorial service will follow at 7:00 PM A committal service will occur Friday, April 25, 2025 at 11:45 AM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
