Funeral services for Mr. William Frederick "Bill" Sims, age 88, of Maylene, Alabama, who went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, will be conducted Friday morning, September 28 at 11 o’clock from the chapel of Rockco Funeral Home in Montevallo, Alabama with Rev. John Meyer and Dr. Steve Andrews officiating. Interment will be at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo at 12:30pm.
Mr. Sims was preceded in death by his parents Sidney A. and Leona Harper Sims along with his brothers Sidney Sims Jr., D.A. Sims and Donald Sims, and his sisters Edna Pickett, Lorene Lawley, Merle Greene and Barbara Jenkins.
Mr. Sims was born June 29, 1930 in Shelby County, Alabama. He joined the Navy at 17 and returned to civilian life after his discharge three years later. One year after his Naval discharge, he was drafted into the Army where he served during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Sims returned to work at Pittman Tractor company, now Thompson Tractor Company, where he began as an office assistant but advanced to heavy equipment mechanic, shop foreman and field representative, retiring after 44 years of faithful service.
After his retirement, Mr. Sims and his wife traveled around the country working with mission teams to erect church buildings and attending reunions of the “Orphans of the Pacific” which was a group of Naval veterans who had served on the USS Comstock. Mr. Sims was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alabaster. He also enjoyed participating in an early morning coffee club with his friends.
Mr. Sims is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Jimmie Yessick Sims, daughters, Susan Meyer (John), and Donna McFeeters (Bill), granddaughter, Allison Meyer and many nieces and nephews.
Bill Sims was a kind and hardworking man who always put his family, God, and country above all else. He will be dearly missed.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday morning, September 28 at 10 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Alabaster “Bridge to the Future” fund.
