Denise Joy Artimisi, aged 70, of Alabaster, Alabama, passed away at home on May 31, 2026, and is now at rest in the presence of the Lord. Born Denise Ann Oliver on September 12, 1955, she later chose the name Joy, inspired by a dear friend whose faith she admired. It was a name that reflected the faith, hope, and joy she sought to live by.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and hard worker throughout her life. She took on many trades throughout her life, including office work, welding, and postal delivery. She retired after 19 years of service with the United States Postal Service.A devout Christian, Joy loved studying scripture and sharing her faith with others. She preferred to visit small, local churches where the worship was heartfelt and personal. Her love for singing and karaoke led to the development of her nursing home ministry.
When the grandchildren were little, Joy kept a goodie basket for them. When the grandchildren got older, the basket moved to her ministry, which was lovingly named “The Bible Basket” by the residents. Her grandchildren often attended with her to sing and pray alongside her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Martin and Delores Oliver, and her brother Marty. She is survived by her two children, Kyla Higgins (Eddie) of Alabaster, AL, and Matthew McLain (Rachael) of Helena, AL; her four sisters, Edie, Janice, Marilyn, and Nancy;
her aunt Diane; her grandchildren Kylie (Diego), Auburn, Kaitlyn, Kelsi, Sarah, Claire, Kyle, and Nick, all of whom she cherished.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no public viewing or ceremony. She wished to be remembered for her life and not her death. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to your local church, or that you honor her memory by being the light of the world.
She endured much, worked hard, loved deeply, held fast to her faith, and chose joy.
