She was the middle of three girls born to Clarence and Jewel Chism of Boothton, Alabama. She graduated from Montevallo High School, earned her Bachelor's degree from Alabama College, and Master's degree from the University of Montevallo. She began her teaching career in North Dakota, then in Tuscaloosa, and retired after almost 20 years of teaching 4th grade at Montevallo Elementary School. Even when she wasn't actively teaching in schools, she still served and mentored youth during her time as a Program Director for the Girls Club of America. Even her family was surprised to learn that she was also a medical illustrator for the Spies Nutrition Clinic in Birmingham, AL.
Betty was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Montevallo where she oversaw the program of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion for over 20 years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Alpha Delta Kappa teachers organization, and the Montevallo Historical Society.
Above all she was a servant to others, the best mother anyone could dream up, and a loving Grammy.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Doris Lien (Glenn) and Clarice Boothe (Bill). She is survived by her only son, John Michael Ludwig IV of Montevallo; granddaughter, Jadyn Alyssa Ludwig; nieces, Judy, Kathy, Allison, and Kelly; nephew, Krist; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
A visitation for Betty will be held Friday, June 6, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo), 3715 Highway 25, Montevallo, AL 35115, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Father Jantz will officiate.
Betty will be laid to rest in Montevallo City Cemetery, Highway 73, Montevallo, Alabama.
