Gay Albritton Caspers, age 78, of Alabaster, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. She died quietly at home after being unable to leave her bed following an episode in 2022, dutifully cared for by her loving husband. Remembered as Currie, Gay, Momma, Nana, Soosta, or Mrs. Graytop, she will not be soon forgotten.
Born Currie Gay Albritton, she grew up in Camden and Frisco City, Alabama. She jerked sodas in her father’s drug store and was involved in kid church, marching band, and theater before going to Auburn University, earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology. Her career as a psychometrist took her to Decatur. An arranged group date with friends led to marriage to John Edward Caspers on August 24, 1974. John and Gay lived in Hoover before moving to Alabaster in 1977. Her psychometry career became less central as the needs of her family grew.
She served as a dance mom (not the reality TV kind though), scout mom, sports mom, band mom, children’s Sunday School and VBS teacher, stay-at-home mom, house wife (also not the reality TV kind) and more. She had a big heart and a beautiful soul. If you knew her, you loved her, and chances are good that she loved you too. She found joy in Auburn sports (as hard as it was sometimes), a long series of cats, flowers, birds, sewing, homemade birthday cakes, cards or board games, sci-fi or fantasy, and whatever her children and grandchildren were doing. All her hope was in Jesus; she was ready to depart and be with Him. She wrote in a note years ago before a surgery, “If I don’t wake up, I’ll meet you in heaven.” Having breathed her last, she is now more alive than you or I.
She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Pinkston and Currie Albritton; sister, Linda (“Spooky”) Powe; and brother William “Bud” (Letty) Albritton. Survivors include her husband, John E. Caspers; daughter, Melinda (Danny) Thompson; son, John R. “Rusty” Caspers of Alabaster; and son, Paul (Jessica) Caspers of Thomaston, Georgia; as well as grandchildren, Joseph and fiancée Kaley, Matthew, Sean, and Laura Thompson; Peter, Jacqueline, Charlie, and Lucas Caspers; plus cousins, kin, and old friends too numerous to count.
The funeral service for Gay will be held Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Alabaster, 903 3rd Ave NW, Alabaster, AL 35007, with visitation to begin at 1:00 PM. Pastor Steve Andrews will be officiating. A committal service will occur Monday, August 25, 2025 from 11:45 AM to 12:15 PM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
